Spheres

Newspaper, plastic bolts and nuts, lamp from the former GDR, cable, ca. 280 x 280 cm

Geodesic sphere constructed out of  rolled up newspapers pages collected from the 15th of September 2008 onwards. The structure of  the sphere was first invented by Walther Bauersfeld  who built a planeterium for the Zeiss corporation in 1923, a company in eastern Germany which is specialized on optical systems.  In the 1950s the sphere became hugely popular through Buckminster Fuller who employed it in his idealist and often visionary constructions. Today this structure is  mostly used for radars in military sights and airports.
